If you’re ready to sell your home, here are a few key things to do before your house is on the market.
- Don’t get emotionally involved. You need to stop thinking of your house as a home and start thinking of it as a product.
- Be smart about colors. If you’re going to paint the interior and/or exterior, don’t let your personal taste come into play. Choose neutral colors that don’t stand out.
- Remove the clutter. Get rid of furniture. The less stuff you have in the house the bigger it’s going to look.
- Get rid of family portraits or anything sentimental from public view. Sometimes a home buyer might not be comfortable with the thought of taking your beloved home.

We had to clear my mother-in-law’s house out for sale. It took forever, but we finally did it. It was the childhood home of my husband. So it was necessary for him to not get emotionally involved in preparing the home. Yes, think of your home as product, and make the product good enough for potential sellers to be interested.
