Have Fun While Staying In

When economic times are tough, families begin to cut back on expenses. One of the first things they cut back on are entertainment expenses. These costs are not needs, but wants. It’s crucial to separate needs versus wants and make difficult decisions to save your budget from destruction.

But just because you cut back on your entertainment expenses doesn’t mean you have to cut back on your entertainment. There are other free or low-cost alternatives to the usual more expensive ways you have fun. Here are a few ways to have fun while staying home.

Games

Some of the expensive ways to blow a lot of money on gaming is by going paintball shooting, playing miniature golf or going go-kart racing. You can also spend loads on buying new games for your Wii. But there are other low cost alternatives.

There are a whole host of online games you can play online for free. There’s everything from racing games to action games to strategy games that are ad-supported but free to play.

If you love your Wii too much to give it up, buy used games on eBay. It doesn’t matter if the game doesn’t have the original box or the user manual, all you want is the CD anyway.

Movies

If you usually would spend the weekend going to the movies, you know how expensive that can become. With the high cost of the soda, popcorn, nachos and hot dogs a family of four is going to cost you about $70. But there are alternatives.

With Netflix you can watch movies at home. It’ll cost you only $8 per month to watch movies from the comfort of your own home. If you do however decide that you can’t replicate the movie theater experience, then go during the matinee during the day. Eat at home before and then again after the movie, but don’t buy the costly snacks at the movies.

TV Shows

Cable or satellite television is expensive. If you have several televisions you can easily get up to fees of $100 a month. That’s a whopping $1,200 per year. Don’t expect your prices to go down as seemingly every year or so there’s a price increase, but never a decrease.

But there are alternatives to cable television. There are good shows over-the-air as well. You can catch your local sports team, the local news and some channels play classic movies too. If you can’t give up your favorite cable TV shows though you still may be able to watch them online for free. Visit the website of your favorite TV shows and see if they put their past shows online.
